Every year in Salem, they put on a huge Agriculture Fest for the kids. Tons of farmers, gardeners and more come together to teach kids all about the earth, growing food, how water helps us, tractors, animals, and so much more. We have never been to this and we were skeptical at first but we were blown away amazed by all the things the kids could do, experience, and most of all, after you pay to enter (kids are free) everything inside was free. We came home with about seven or eight plants to plant, and two trees to plant.
If we weren't renting I'd put them all straight in the ground but we are going to put them in pots and take them to our forever home, wherever that is.
We absolutely loved this event and would totally do it all over again.
Mason spent most of the time digging in the dirt with the tractors and toys.
They had a "petting zoo" but all the animals were behind bars so we couldn't really pet them but they were fun to see.
This baby cow tried to chew on my hand which was super interesting. The calf was one month old and didn't have any teeth. So, it didn't hurt. He was so cute!!! I just wanted to take him home.
This horse was available for adoption. Her name was Bella and she had a funny personality. I wanted to taker her home too but we can't fit her in the house. There was a sign that said she might bite if you get too close. We asked her "Do you bite, Bella?" and she started nodding her head and then she showed her teeth. It was so cute, I'm not sure she meant it but it was perfect timing. She was beautiful!!!
These baby chicks were in the process of hatching which takes anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours. You can kind of see a chick in the process of hatching in the middle of the photo. This one had taken a very long time. You can't help chicks peck out of their eggs because the process of pecking out of their eggs helps to strengthen their necks and if they can't do that then they can't survive in the wild so if they don't make it out, they don't survive.
Chicks also don't need to eat for 3 days after birth because they absorb their yolk through their belly buttons right before they hatch and that keeps their bellies full that long.
The time from hatching to fully grown in the grocers' isle at the supermarket is 45 days which is crazy that they grow that fast.
We had an awesome time and we are looking forward to next years Ag Fest!!!
